Small changes with big difference: home office upgrades that actually improve productivity
Not every home office problem requires a renovation. In fact, some of the most effective workspace upgrades have very little to do with the desk itself. More often, they involve improving the way your designated office space functions and supports your daily routines. After all, productivity is rarely about working harder. You will increase your productivity if you find the right ways for you to reduce friction and distractions.
Here are a few changes we regularly recommend before considering a full redesign.
Start with lighting - our favourite always
Most home offices rely on a single overhead fixture, which is often the least flattering and least effective type of lighting. Adding a task lamp immediately improves visual comfort and reduces eye strain, particularly for those spending long hours in front of screens. Layered lighting also makes the room feel more intentional and less temporary. If possible, position your desk near natural daylight. Good light influences focus, mood and energy more than most people realise.
Clear the surface
A cluttered desk creates visual noise. This doesn't mean your workspace needs to be minimalist, but every item should earn its place. Keep only the tools you use regularly within reach and relocate everything else. A workspace should support concentration, not compete with your thoughts for attention.
Improve what you sit on
Before replacing your desk, evaluate your chair. A supportive chair often has a greater impact on daily comfort than any decorative upgrade. The reality is simple: if you spend six hours working in discomfort or your leg sleeps off after an hour of deep work, no amount of beautiful styling will compensate for it. Your back will thank you later in the long run.
Think vertically
One of the most overlooked opportunities in home offices is the wall space above the desk. Floating shelves, pinboards, artwork, books and closed storage can free valuable work surface while creating a more considered environment. The goal is not merely organisation, but creating a workspace that feels complete. We recently had an inquiry for a work station that only used 150cm as orientation for the joinery. Avoid that mistake so your joinery does not appear as if it coming out of a teenage room if you actually have the ceiling right to go all the way up. More storage, more custom, more designer.
Manage cables properly
Nothing makes a workspace feel unfinished faster than visible cords. When you have the chance during build, integrate your charging stations in your floor plan and integrate floor sockets according to your floor plan for a floor lamp or a desk lamp of your floating desk table - just as we are currently planning for one client. If cable management becomes an afterthought, consider simple cable trays, concealed charging stations and integrated outlets to create visual calm. It is a small adjustment that often makes a disproportionate difference.
Add something personal
Productive spaces should not feel sterile. Add a favourite artwork, collected object, meaningful photograph or beautiful material sample for some personality without distraction. Ideally, your home office should still reflect the person(s) using them.
Create different layers of use
Increasingly, a home office serves multiple purposes. It may function as a workspace during the day, a Zoom backdrop in meetings, a reading corner in the evening and occasionally even a content creation space. Rather than designing for one activity, consider how the room can support several. Often, a side table, an occasional chair or additional shelf is all that is needed to cover multiple functions all in one.
Before you renovate
We don’t advocate for a drastic change if we can avoid it. We are convinced that a better workspace comes from a series of thoughtful adjustments that improve your comfort, organisation flow and lighting. Good design does not request you to startall over. With these tips, you certainly can what you already have work harder for you.
